Jonas Lutz

Jonas Lutz is a Finnish-born designer and maker based in Rotterdam. He creates objects of bold simplicity, using elegant solutions, often with a tacit playfulness, in a continu- ous search for the novel and undiscovered. The simplicity of form is balanced with a gentleness that invites the touch and modesty, revealing a deep comprehension of materials.

Feral Creatures are furniture pieces inspired by a deer, a hare and a fox. Most of the wood used to make the chair, table and sideboard came from a fallen plane tree in the park of Schloss Hollenegg. During his residency, Lutz spent a day cutting through the tree’s crown to collect the most interest- ing-looking branches. In Rotterdam, he sawed off the bark in sections and “freed” faceted yet organic-looking shapes, which he then sanded and treated. In this way, the natural curves of the branches become part of the animals’ expression. Initially, Lutz was inspired by the many hunting trophies in the castle and found more animal references in the many ornamental carvings on the furniture. Later, he went looking for animals in the forest.
