Jakob Niemann is an Austrian designer and artist based in Vienna and Stockholm. He studied Mechanical Engineering at the TU Vienna, Industrial Design at the University of Applied Arts Vienna and Wood Oriented Furniture Design at the HDK Gothenburg. His work has a material-based approach, focusing on wood and forestry. Crafting objects from natural resources, he aims for a raw aesthetic that reveals the life within the material.
Brushwood Furniture consists of seats made from single hazel branches from the forest undergrowth and ash planks of standardised dimensions. Branches with straight segments and a natural Y-shaped fork are selected and steamed immediately after harvesting: a first time to remove the bark and a second time to soften the wood structure. The branches are then ready to be bent into a special jig using a twisting-bending method developed by Niemann. After cooling, the steamed parts dry for four weeks. The twisted branches are finished by brushing and smoothing the surface. Niemann produced the bent hazel elements, and local carpenter Peter Gmeiner made the ash parts designed to be efficiently manufactured from a single hardwood board.
